New toys… er… I mean… gear

My latest toy; a game changer for video journalism
So as I prepare to head abroad, I’ve been consolidating/buying my gear. Here’s my basic backpack journalist kit:
- Panasonic GH1K — a 12 megapixel still camera with interchangeable lenses. Full control and almost no shutter lag, plus Panasonic’s great Lumix engine make this practically a professional camera. It puts my D100, which I still love very much, in the dust.
- But even more important, it takes full 1080p HD video. I’m content shooting in 720p or even 480p for web and storage purposes and even at those resolutions, pixel quality is amazing and far better than I need for YouTube display. Combine that with full-manual control during video AND continuous or controlled autofocus (5D Mark II can’t do that) and this is the game changer video journalists have been looking for.
- And lastly, it has audio-in. A 2.5mm jack, but with a converter, I’m good to go.
- Tascam DR07 audio recorder; radio quality WAV and MP3.
- Microphones: Azden ECZ-990 mini-shotgun, Azden WLX-Pro wireless lav, Audio Technica ATR20 standard cardioid.
- Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS for quick point-n-shoot photos and videos.
- MacBook Pro 2.33GHZ Core 2 Duo loaded with Final Cut Express, Audacity, Photoshop CS and other fun software.
All of that, a notebook or two and a guidebook will fit in a small backpack or briefcase. And with a total price tag of about $4,500 plus tax, that’s the future of international journalism.
