To hell and back

Surreal hiking in Hell's Gate National Park

During my final days in Kenya, I went with Sara, a new friend from London, for a night at Lake Naivasha, a small tourist attraction and great weekend retreat. We had drinks on the lake, I got stuck in mud up to my thighs (thanks Sara) and we stared at Africa’s most dangerous animal — the hippo — just 20 yards off.

On the second day, we biked to Hell’s Gate National Park and back. It’s a bit shocking to ride a mountain bike a stone’s throw from zebras and giraffes.

We also hiked in an old gorge carved through the park, where I took the above picture, featuring Sara and Patrick, our Maasai guide.
