And we’re back! (with cows)

I had to share the beach only with these guys

I had to share the beach only with these guys

Little known fact about me: I have an unreasonable fear of cattle. Big, dull cow eyes creep me out. Especially when they’re attached to a stupidly large face with horns.

Don’t laugh. I’m not kidding.

Hence, I was actually quite nervous when I encountered this herd of cattle on a deserted beach in Little Andaman. Literally, there was not a living thing on the sand except me, some scurrying crabs and these cows.

I’m thinking to myself: If these cows get all crazy and stampede, what the hell will I do? It’s thick sand. I’m not running anywhere in thick sand.

And the jungle is tall palms. I’m not exactly a spider monkey here. And the water is rip tide. Who swims in rip tide?.

Again, I repeated: what the hell will I do?

(Believe me, I realize how irrational this sounds now. But at the time I was gripped with fear.)

In the end, I picked up a stick and sidestepped very carefully and slowly around the cows. And they just stared at me. Stared right into my soul.

Cattle-phobia aside, this empty, golden stretch of Butler Bay beach was how I spent the day after Christmas. I don’t think I spoke a lick of English that day, unless, as above, I was talking to myself.

Alas, now I’ve returned to civilization. I’m already plotting ways to get back into scuba gear. Anyone for a week in Goa in early March? I also desperately wish to go to Israel and the Red Sea as well as Belize.

    DEAR ADAM ,
ANIMALS ARE MORE SINCERE THAN HUMANS.THAT IS WAY PEOPLE WORSHIPPED ANIMALS IN ANCIENT TIMES AND STILL WORSHIP THEM e.g COW IN INDIA. I THINK ANIMALS AND TREES NEVER PLAY BAD WITH NATURE AND MORE NEAR TO GOD.THE DAY YOU SPEND WITH THESE MUTE AND SINCERE CREATURES WAS THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. HAPPY TO READ ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE.

I love cows. I grew up with hundreds of them, ate hundreds of them and even edited a photo from the wire tonight featuring the lovely creatures. Give cows a chance.
